Well owners in flooded areas of Nebraska are advised to have well water tested for safety and to drink bottled water until that can be done.
“Certainly, if a well was covered by floodwater, it needs to be evaluated once floodwaters recede,” said University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering Professor Bruce Dvorak. “If there’s reason to believe that floodwaters may have come within 100 feet of your well, it’s advised that you evaluate the well to identify any damage and test the water for contaminants.”
A licensed well contractor should be hired to identify any well equipment or operation issues.
Testing for contaminants costs approximately $17 at the State Public Health Environmental Laboratory. To order a test kit, call 402-471–3935.
