A Jan. 8 public hearing has been set by the Tri-Basin Natural Resources District directors to determine if Anderson Township in Phelps County northeast of Funk should be moved from Phase One to Phase Two groundwater quality management. The hearing was approved for a 1:30 p.m. start at the Tri-Basin office in Holdrege in conjunction with the regular January board meeting.According to a press release, the hearing decision was made following a review of groundwater quality data from the past few years that show groundwater nitrate levels in Anderson Township have continued to be above 9 parts per million, which is the trigger point for moving an area to Phase Two under Tri-Basin’s Groundwater Management Area Rules. The Environmental Protection Agency has set 10 ppm as the safe drinking water level.
