Each summer Rembolt Ludtke welcomes Summer Associates — more commonly known as law clerks — to the firm in order for these talented people to gain more insight to a legal career.Madison L. Huber — one of our 2018 Summer Associates — hails from North Dakota, and currently attends law school at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Madison’s interest in law began with her favorite genre of books — legal thrillers. She finds the legal career exciting, even though it isn’t as scandalous as Grisham would portray it.The law can be extremely overwhelming for lay people when they are in the midst of legal issues, and Madison hopes to use her skills in the legal career to make a difference for others by advocating for them and interpreting the law in an understandable way. She realized early on that the law is almost like a foreign language to many people, and it is important for people to have translators in lawyers.Madison appreciates two primary things about her work at Rembolt Ludtke. The first is how the attorneys truly care about mentoring the Summer Associates, and the second is the challenging experience the firm gives Summer Associates, entrusting them with important, tangible projects.Madison recalls :
What I most appreciate about the attorneys at Rembolt Ludtke is their willingness to teach. From senior partners to associates, everyone, regardless of their busy workload, is willing to take the time to explain the law and their legal decisions. For example, I was fortunate enough to attend a mediation with Tim Engler. As we went from room to room, Tim took the time to explain why he took the approach he did, answer any questions I had about the process, and ask my thoughts on issues in the case. Further, observing him in action was truly an adrenaline rush. I left work that day excited about the future, knowing that experience was confirmation I had chosen the right career path. I hope to be half the mentor that these attorneys have been to me when I am a practicing attorney.
And regarding the same mediation, Tim Engler said:
Not all lawyers have observed a mediation through the eyes of a mediator so having Madison shadow me in the mediation gave her that opportunity. I am hoping this experience has given her a better understanding of the dispute resolution process. Having an understanding of how a mediator approaches a mediation will help her represent future clients when they are faced with attempting to resolve a dispute using mediation.
Our firm is humbled by the opportunity we have in teaching the next generation of attorneys, and we share Madison’s desire to be the helpful translators of the law to our clients.
