Republican River plan seeks balance of water uses, supplies for 25 years

Tri-Basin is the first of the four Republican Basin natural resources districts to approve the recently completed Republican River Basinwide Plan.The vote at Tuesday’s board meeting in Elwood followed Tri-Basin’s annual projects tour that mostly focused on Gosper County.Prior to the vote, the directors heard a basin plan presentation by Carol J. Myers Flaute, integrated water management coordinator for the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, and Tri-Basin General Manager John Thorburn.After DNR and all four NRDs approve of the basinwide plan — the final two votes are expected at Upper and Lower Republican board meetings in September — public hearings likely will be scheduled in the NRDs in December and January, Myers Flaute said.
