A new study aims to test the possibility of a utility corporation selling some of Omaha's excess water to Lincoln. The plan could save money for residents and businesses in both cities, according to Metropolitan Utilities District officials. The utility's board approved this month to pay for half of the more than $97,500 feasibility study, the Omaha World-Herald reported. Lincoln City Council will hold a public hearing Aug. 27 to discuss joining the study. The city would contribute about $49,000."We know a second source of water will be needed down the road, as a growing city," said Donna Garden, assistant director of Lincoln Public Works and Utilities.Lincoln lacks a significant local source of freshwater, so the city is deciding how to diversify. The city's utility, Lincoln Water System, is adding a new well along the Platte River this year, which should secure the city until 2025.
