Omaha-area homeowners and businesses face a nearly 30 percent hike in sewer rates over the next five years as they continue to pay more for upgrades in the city’s sewer system.
By 2023, the monthly sewer bill for a typical homeowner is expected to be about $60, or $720 a year. That’s about five times as much as it was in 2007, at the start of the upgrade, when the average monthly sewer bill was $12.
Mayor Jean Stothert has proposed the latest hikes — 5.25 percent annually for five years — to pay for sewer improvements that reduce the amount of raw sewage going into area waterways. The federally mandated effort began under former Mayor Mike Fahey.
