In order to head off problems, the James River Water Development District (JRWDD) will start real-time monitoring for nitrates in the river near Yankton.
The JRWDD board unanimously decided Wednesday to rent the monitor, according to board chairman Dan Klimisch of Yankton. The action was taken during the board’s regular meeting in Pierre.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) plans to install the monitor this spring, Klimisch said. Once installed, the river will receive 24/7 monitoring for nitrates, which come from synthetic fertilizer and manure, he noted.
“Basically, the probe goes into the river and constantly monitors the levels of nitrates in the water,” he said. “We would cover the costs for this probe, and the USGS will install it and maintain it.”
