Voters will decide in May whether to continue the Lincoln tradition of paying for stormwater construction projects with bond issues, funded through property taxes.
The Lincoln City Council approved the $9.9 million stormwater bond election issue on a 6-0 vote Monday, with Councilman Jon Camp absent.
Since 1977, Lincoln voters have approved 14 other stormwater bond issues and seven have been retired, said Donna Garden, assistant director of the Transportation and Utilities Department, at a public hearing on the bond issue.
The largest project on the proposed list, Dead Man's Run, will move 480 homes and businesses out of the floodplain, ending their need for flood insurance and allowing new development.
Other government entities will pay 70 percent of that $25 million project, which includes widening the channel and putting in new bridges. The Army Corps of Engineers will fund about $10 million and the Lower Platte Natural Resources District will put in $7.5 million, City Council members were told.
