An important step toward construction of a large water retention project on Cottonwood Ranch between Elm Creek and Overton was taken Monday by the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District.
The board approved a water service agreement with the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program.
The plan is to transport excess Platte River water, when available, through CNPPID’s Phelps Canal and a pipeline to a retention area created by berms on the south side of the river.
The goal of the PRRIP project is to store water above and below ground that will return to the river later by direct releases or groundwater recharge to meet target flows set for threatened and endangered species.
