Maintaining the levees in place on the North Fork River through Norfolk was the focus of attention Monday night at the Norfolk City Council meeting.
Council member Jim Lange said the process is expensive and required by the federal government, but it also results in benefits. If it wasn’t done, property owners near the river would be at significant risk and their insurance rates would greatly increase, said Lange, who presided over Monday’s meeting in the absence of Mayor Josh Moenning.
The highest dollar contract approved Monday was with HDR Engineering of Omaha for the second phase of levee certification work. In all, there will be five phases to the project.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires the city to maintain minimum standards for the levee system.
