Releases from Gavins Point Dam will remain at higher-than-average levels through the remainder of the summer and into the fall, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Tuesday.
Above-average runoff this spring and summer has filled the corps' six Missouri River reservoirs, and higher releases are needed to move the water out of the sytem, John Remus, chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division, said in a news release Tuesday.
Releases from Gavins Point, near Yankton, South Dakota, will remain near 58,000 cubic feet per second during August but could be reduced if necessary to lessen the potential for downstream flooding that could be caused by heavy rainfalls south of Sioux City.
Gavins Point releases in July averaged 49,600 cfs, ranging from 26,000-58,000 cfs.
